Pan-European colocation provider Interxion have given details of a significant new expansion of their Schiphol-Rijk Amsterdam data centre hub.

Amsterdam 7, or Ams7, will offer up to 7300sq m (aprx 80,000 sq ft) of net technical space or 13MW of customer power.  The new facility will be delivered across six distinct phases, the first of which will be delivered in Q1 2014 and the company expect to deliver the first four phases, a total of 4600 sq m or 8.2MW of IT power over the course of the next four quarters until Q1 2015.

Interxion claim up to 40 networks or carriers are present on their Schiphol Rijk data centre campus as well as two Internet Exchanges, AMSIX and the now KPN owned NL-ix.

At the close of their third quarter in 2013, Interxion has 79,300 sq m of net technical capacity available across the whole of Europe, or 81MW of power, with an occupancy rate of 75%.

The planned fill rate of this impressive new expansion by Interxion, involving a capex spend of no less than €100m, suggests a shift towards larger scale deal sizes, perhaps more of a wholesale model than smaller retail colocation customers.  The sheer scale of this expansion by Interxion cannot be understimated and has to be one of their single biggest data centre investments to date.  Interxion added over 11,000 sq m of new space in 2012 and so far in 2013 have added over 5000 sq m – so this one site alone is expected to add 4600 sq m over the year from Q1 2014.

Overall the data centre growth situation in the Amsterdam market would appear favourable, so matching the reported demand for this market.  For example in September this year Digital Realty recently announced the purchase of  a 5 acre site at Hoofdorp in south west Amsterdam, with plans to build out 16,000 sq m, 11.5MW of customer power, so increasing the amount of potential wholesale capacity.  The other and longer established wholesale operator in Amsterdam, Global Switch, also announced a significant expansion of their Amsterdam site in January 2013, with 25,000 sq m of gross space to be made available in a phased build out with the first phase already let and due to become live in Q1 2014.

Elsewhere, all operators, like Interxion, continue to find solutions to increase their capacity, such as Equinix’s AMS3 site of 17,800 sq m of gross capacity or Telecity’s AMS5 facility, 6000 sq m net or 9MW of customer power.  Finally, like the London market, there are a number of new entrants into the Dutch data centre market such as Evoswitch, who recently opened the 6th phase of their site bringing total capacity to 12,200 sq m of net tech, with potential capacity still an impressive 40,000 sq m, according to the company, or the smaller Switch Data Centres located in the Amsterdam South East.  In summary therefore, impressive expansion from all parts of the market.
