Colo-X analysis

Interxion LON3 is the third data centre on the Interxion Hanbury Street campus, located in Shoreditch’s  trendy Brick Lane area and sits between the original LON1 building, on the other side of the street to the west and is 20m away from LON2, with a building in between.

The Interxion London data centre campus is unusual, being in among a variety of hip and trendy bars, fashion retailers and nightclubs! But if you want a colocation service in this area, the LON3 data centre has the usual Interxion quality, though perhaps not the ultra-low PUE other modern facilities can offer due to the restrictions of retrofitting an existing building that whilst suitable, was never designed to be a data centre.

Quite a few finance firms use the Interxion London site as it is both nearby to the City and offers reasonable average latency to the various London trading venues. Power per rack is up to modern standards, from low power 2kW options up to 5kW or more, with good carrier choice and an established LINX (London Internet Exchange) site. Cross-connects to LON1 and LON2 possible.

Interxion LON3 facility description

Like Interxion LON1 and LON2, LON3 is a retrofit of a building on the former Truman’s Brewery site in the now uber-trendy Shoreditch area of East London and in particular Brick Lane. Very similar to LON2, LON3 comprises 20,000 sq ft of net technical capacity located across three floors. Each floor is fairly small, fitted out with a variety of open colocation and dedicated caged areas.

The Interxion London campus is popular with wide variety of sectors, in particular finance/trading firms who find the location offers reasonable all-round latency to the key London trading venues. In particular, the London Stock Exchange is located quite close by on Paul Street whilst the Equinix Slough Campus is 30 miles to the west and Basildon, home of ICE (Intercontinental Exchange, the key futures trading venue in London and also owner of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)), is 30 miles to the east, thus the location offers a single location with reasonable latency to all (but not the lowest latency, which would require being physically located in each trading venue).  Interxion claim there are 200 investment firms, high-frequency trading firms, hedge funds, brokers and banks on their London campus.

Interxion claim 90 networks across the campus, with PeeringDB listing 70 networks.  The original building, LON1 will doubtless have the majority of these as it was the original building on site, opening in 2001.

Interxion still have planning permission for a 40,000 sq ft LON4 data centre 250m away on the site of the former Cooperage Building on the corner of Buxton Street and Spital Street.
