Wholesale data centre operator Global Swtich has announced a new 35,000 sq m (375,ooo sq ft) or 45MVA data centre facility on the Tseung Kwan O (TKO) Industrial Estate in Hong Kong.

Development will commence in 2013 with the first phase of capacity targetted for use in Q1 2015.

Adding a new wholesale offering to Hong Kong will be an interesting development for a data centre market that has to date been largely served by the established retail focussed operators, iAdvantage, HKColo and Equinix.  Whilst Global Switch’s traditional model is to sell large scale halls or suites, on a long term lease (typically 10-15 years) to large scale users, it quite possible that that some of this wholesale capacity might be offered into the retail colocation market by wholesale customers – a reseller model and certainly this is very much thel experience we have seen with Global Switch London for example.

Global Switch already operate in Singapore and Sydney (450,000 sq ft) since 2000 and have announced expansions of both facilities over the past few years.  In November 2011 Global Switch announced they had received planning permission for a new 270,000 sq ft data centre facility in the northern Singapore  suburb of Woodlands, about 15km from the existing Global Switch Singapore site.  A year earlier in Sydney Global Switch announced a second phase to their existing site on Harris Street, Ultimo.  “Sydney2″ will offer 365,000 sq ft making Global Switch Sydney the largest data centre campus in the southern hemisphere.  The first phase of Global Switch Sydney 2 should be opening in early 2013.
