    Colo-X analysis

iomart’s Glasgow data centre is one of a series of facilities built across the country in the dot-com boom by 186K Ltd and acquired by iomart in March 2007.  It offers two data halls of around 4000 sq ft each. Power per rack light by modern standards, network mostly from iomart.

    Facility description

iomart’s DC1 Glasgow data centre is a single story light industrial builing with a 2 story office block at the front and is located about 1 mile south-west of Glasgow city centre on the south side of the River Clyde. Junctions 21 and 22 of the M8 are a few minutes drive from the property.  The unit is freestanding with secure plant yard to the rear and customer staff parking to the front (including ramp access to the data centre) both secured by palisade fencing or walls.

Having originally opened in 2001 under the build out of the 186K national network the original fit out was to a Tier2 standard, so single onsite generator supporting A+B UPS power feeds, single incoming 11kV power feed.  The data centre capacity is some 8000  sq ft across two distinct data halls on the ground floor.  Because of the age of the site power density is light at only 2kW per rack.

This site and five others were built as part of the fibre network build of Lattice PLC, who at one time ran the national gas transmission network in the UK (originally part of British Gas).  Lattice spent £450m building this network under the name 186k.

In 2002 Lattice merged with National Grid (the electricity tranmission network operator) and the network was disposed of, with the fibre assets sold to Hutchinson3G (to eventually become the start of GEO Fibre Networks) and the data centres along with the 186K name were acquired by a Leeds based internet entrepeneur, Dominic Marrocco who was the vendor to iomart in 2007.  The transaction included the freehold of this site.
