Colo-X analysis

The Clearstream Church Village data centre is a high quality, if relatively small, regional facility servicing the hosting needs of clients from 1U up to some 40 full racks.

Being a former regional electricity sub-station and control room the site offers high power resilience and diverse network options from BT and Western Power.

Highly attractive commercial terms for quarter, half and full rack packages enhanced by superb onsite support, a rare example of an all-inclusive hosting solution, ideal for smaller end-users in the Welsh and south-west England market.  All clients, benefit from paying only for the power they use, so underpinning the keen commercial proposition.

Clearstream Church village facility description

Originally built by South Wales Electricity in the 1950’s as a regional control centre, the building was acquired (on a freehold basis) by local ISP Clearstream in 2012 who saw its potential for conversion to data centre use, benefitting from a robust construction and of course dual power supplies. South Wales Electricity was acquired by local water utility Welsh Water in 1996 to form Hyder, who in turn were acquired by Western Power (who also run the electricity distribution network in the south west of the UK) in 2000.

Clearstream have now fitted out a range of data suites in the building, some of which are dedicated to single customers of up to 40 cabinets, whilst others are offering shared colocation for multiple-clients (see our pictures taken in June 2022).

Facility PUE enhanced by free-air cooling (perhaps not surprising given the local climate and that the facility is located 600 feet above sea level) and is claimed to be an impressive 1.1. This, together with the metered power mentioned above ensures clients aren’t paying for power they don’t use. All clients also benefit from excellent onsite support, as you’d expect from a highly experienced and customer focussed hosting provider.

Network break-out via two routes to BT Cardiff and also into Vantage Newport and all colo enclosures include dual network ports as standard.

100% SLA on network, power and environment.  ISO-270001 and 9001 accreditations.
