Equinix, Volt Avenue, London, NW10 6PW
Colo-X analysis
Telecity Powergate was Telecity’s flagship site prior to the company’s acquisition by US-based Equinix in late 2015. The site certainly looks impressive, especially post-2012 when the new and larger 20MW second phase opened, making the entire site nearly 30MW. Because of its scale, Telecity were able to sell larger deals here than in any of their other London sites.
On the other hand, as a newer site located much further from the city centre, Powergate has never achieved the network density seen in London Docklands (sites such as Telehouse or HEX) or even that seen in Slough, a much newer data centre campus. The LINX node here only has about 10 ports in use. It will be interesting to see how things develop here under Equinix ownership from 2016 onwards. Power and standards are typical for a modern high-quality data centre.
Equinix LD9 West London facility description
This is the newest Telecity facility in London and opened in spring 2009. It is located almost adjacent to a large Colt data centre on the aptly named Volt Avenue.
Phase 1 was only 8MW across 50,000 sq ft of net technical capacity, built out to a high standard in a former modern warehouse building. Phase 2 consists of 12 zones, each of 878 sq m or 1.76MW, giving a relatively high density of 2kW/sq m. Customers include financials, biotech and enterprise. It’s an extremely impressive facility and will meet the needs of the most demanding clients.
