Colo-X analysis

Interxion Hanbury Street, or LON1, is a well-established colocation facility located just to the east of London’s historic financial district, the City. The data centre opened in 2001 and offers 50,000 sq ft of net technical capacity, while the newer LON2 and LON3 each offer 20,000 sq ft of net tech to complete the Interxion London campus. Interxion offer a standard of either 2.5kW or 5kW per cabinet, with higher densities in some areas.

The site is a good option for colocation clients wanting carrier-neutral colocation close to the City and London’s growing tech hub in Shoreditch or “Silicon Roundabout” and is particularly popular with financial firms wanting reasonable all round access to London’s key financial trading venues, with Interxion estimating nearly 200 clients from the capital markets sector. Decent carrier list, an established LINX location and ability to run cross-connects between all three buildings.

Interxion LON 1 facility description

Interxion LON1 is located just off the fashionable Brick Lane located to the north of the City. The building is part of the former Truman’s Brewery site, and is a solidly built industrial-style building across several floors of varying height. LON2, a 20,000 sq ft net technical capacity new facility, opened in 2012 and is located in a separate building about 50 metres away and the newer LON3, which opened in 2019 is on the other side of the road from LON1.

The Interxion London campus is popular with wide variety of sectors, in particular finance/trading firms who find the location offers reasonable all-round latency to the key London trading venues. In particular, the London Stock Exchange is located quite close by on Paul Street whilst the Equinix Slough Campus is 30 miles to the west and Basildon, home of ICE (Intercontinental Exchange, the key futures trading venue in London and also owner of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)), is 30 miles to the east, thus the location offers a single location with reasonable latency to all (but not the lowest latency, which would require being physically located in each trading venue).  Interxion suggest there are 200 investment firms, high-frequency trading firms, hedge funds, brokers and banks on their London campus.

Interxion claim 90 networks across the campus, with PeeringDB listing 70 networks.  LON1 will doubtless have the majority of these carriers as it was the original building on site.

Interxion still have planning permission for a 40,000 sq ft LON4 data centre 250m away on the site of the former Cooperage Building on the corner of Buxton Street and Spital Street.
