Pulsant, 18 Brunel Way, Fareham, Hampshire, PO15 5TX
Colo-X analysis
The Pulsant Fareham data centre has been through numerous owners since opening in 2007. SCC acquired the site from electrical utility SSE in October 2014 who in turn acquired it from Cantosp plc in 2009. Under SCC, the site was paired with their Birmingham data centre. Pulsant acquired both of these data centres in April 2025.
There are two large enterprise clients here as well as numerous others from SCC. Pulsant will now develop a greater focus on colocation and network than under SCC. And the customer count should grow as the site becomes more suitable for smaller users seeking colocation, network and support.
Pulstant Fareham SE-5 data centre description
The data centre is housed in a large warehouse building over a ground and mezzanine first floor with gross floor space of 80,000 sq ft. It’s located just off the M23 between Portsmouth and Southampton on the UK’s south coast.
The design philosophy behind the site was to build a pod system (originally created by IBM) with each pod being either 1,000 or 3,000 sq ft. A 1,000 sq ft pod will house 40 cabinets on a hot/cold aisle basis. It’s a tidy design with all CRAC (air handling units) on the
outside of the room for a clean internal environment. With additional CRAC units, pods can handle up to 25kW per rack.
Having been part of a large electrical utility, power provision is impressive. There are two connections at 132kV grid-level to diverse substations, and a 2N electrical distribution.
About Pulsant
Through a series of acquisitions, Pulsant now offer 14 data centres across the UK which they refer to as their PulsantEdge. These sites range in size from 200kW up to 4MW, and providing around 25MW now in total. As well as the two newly aquired SCC sites, larger locations include Edinburgh, Reading and Croydon. All sites are now connected by Pulsant’s network backbone.
The company has been backed by Antin Infrastructure Partners since 2021, with revenue of just over £100m in the year to December 2024, and staff of 300 (not including the SCC sites).
