Colo-X analysis

The Pulsant Maidenhead data centre was originally opened by Blue Square Data in 2006, who were acquired by Pulsant in 2011. The facility originally found strong traction in the ISP and hosting community when it opened as a low cost alternative to Docklands based Redbus, an operator who had also been popular with the emerging UK hosting community until it was acquired by arch-rival Telecity in 2005. Since opening, two further phases of the site were built and it now offers just over 1MW of IT load over 1500 square metres of data floor.

Pulsant Maidenhead is now one of a string of 12 data centres that Pulsant operate across the country, from Edinburgh to Croydon and they are now seeking to reposition themselves as one of the UK’s leading “edge” operators.

Pulsant Maidenhead SE-2 facility description

Located just off the M4 motorway, the Pulsant Maidenhead site consists of three separate data centre buildings, the first of which opened in August 2006 and offered some 6,600 sq ft of space, 240 racks. Across the enclosed yard, Phase 2 of 7,100 sq ft went live in May 2007 and then Phase 3 of 13,000 sq ft opened in 2009. In total the site offers approximately 25,000 sq ft of gross capacity or 16,000 sq ft net technical.

Blue Square was originally acquired in March 2011 by Lumison. This was followed by the further acquisition of Dedipower in October 2011 after which they renamed the enlarged group as Pulsant in March 2012.

After the string of acquisitions ovee the past decade or so Pulsant now operate 12 data centres across the UK, ranging in size from 200kW to nearly 4MW and providing some 20MW of capacity in total.  All are listed on Colo-X (use our search function).

Pulsant Maidenhead is one of four that they operate in the 1-2MW capacity size. The company is now making much of their focus on “edge” colocation. Besides colocation (rack and power) Pulsant offer both network and full suite of managed services.
