Colo-X analysis

The Pulsant Newcastle East data centre was originally opened by north east based IT services company KnowledgeIT in November 2007 as a hybrid DR and data centre facility, with a Tier2 standard data centre to support about 100 racks or 0.2MW of IT load. KnowledgeIT was acquired by Onyx in 2014 and then Onyx was in turn bought by Pulsant in 2016.

This small data centre now forms one of a string of 12 across the country that Pulsant operate, from Edinburgh down to Croydon, as Pulsant seek to reposition themselves as one of the UK’s “edge” operators.

Pulsant Newcastle East NE-2 facility description

The Pulsant Newcastle East data centre is located about 7 miles north east of Newcastle city centre (where Pulsant’s Newcastle Central site is) in North Shields and is about 2 miles north of the Tyne Tunnel.

The 10,000 sq ft warehouse is on a mixed use industrial park.

Pulsant operate 12 data centres across the UK, ranging in size from 200kW to nearly 4MW and providing some 20MW of capacity in total. The company is now making much of their focus on “edge” colocation. Their Newcastle East site is amongst their smallest at present, but has ample scope for expansion if required.  Besides colocation (rack and power) Pulsant offer both network and full suite of managed services.
