I was most interested – impressed, even – to see Pulsant making yet another acquisition in the UK data centre market. Yesterday (31 March 2025) Pulsant announced their purchase of two data centres from SCC.
The data centres are the 2MW Cole Valley site in Birmingham, a short distance away from SCC’s headquarters and the 3MW Fareham site, on the south coast. This is quite some addition to Pulsant’s existing 12 data centres across the UK which provide a combined 20MW.
I suspect SCC will remain in situ, but now as a tenant. Meanwhile Pulsant can concentrate on provisioning and marketing the sites further.
The Fareham site has had several owners over the years. It originally opened under Cantono plc before it was acquired by electric utility SSE in 2009. SCC then bought it in 2015, making Pulsant the fourth operator.
SCC hasn’t really been a carrier-neutral colocation provider. Instead, they sought to sell wider solutions that might include data centre services. Conversely, Pulsant are focussing on their portfolio of national data centres and ‘edge’ colocation.
