Tim Anker of Colo-XWith a potential client seeking space for a few racks in the City, I accompanied them to Stellanor’s Goswell Road data centre. This central London facility is very familiar to me – unlike its new owner, Stellanor Datacenters. Fortunately, I have known Stellanor’s CEO Steve Scott for most of my career in this sector, so it was great to see him again and learn more.

My client is a high-profile name from the media sector. They are currently closing down their Soho-based offices and therefore wanting to move a few racks of in-house IT and test/development equipment into a suitable nearby data centre.

Ideally, this would be in the City for easy access for their team from their new, smaller location. Power density is quite low, so the high minimum commitment from some data centres and operators means that facilities such as Goswell Road are well suited to their needs.

Stellanor founded with two former Colt (originally Level3) data centres

Stellanor have only owned the Goswell Road data centre since the deal with Colt closed in September 2025. The deal came with the other former Level3 data centre on Braham Street, located near Aldgate East on the other side of the City. As a key network node in both locations, Colt (who continue to own and operate the former Level3 network) will remain in situ.

Goswell Road is a big building! It is over a 0.25 million square feet, split roughly 50/50 between technical or data centre space and offices. There is around 4MW of built-out IT load at present, with around 50% occupancy.

It’s one of the longest-running London data centres, built on the site of the former Gordon’s Gin Distillery. Its red brick façade on Goswell Road is Grade 1 listed. But behind this the building was essentially built from the ground up by Level3 for data centre use at the height of the dot-com boom in the late ’90s.

The large amount of office space in the building includes the entire 40,000 sq ft fourth floor, which was fully fitted out to once be the London headquarters for CenturyLink. It offers a rare opportunity (especially in central London) of having both data centre and office accommodation in the same building – a feature that was of great interest to our client.

Stellanor spend £127m on Redcentric’s eight UK data centres and set to become an important operator in the UK retail colocation market

Since acquiring the two Colt data centres, Stellanor have announced the acquisition of a further eight data centres from Redcentric plc for £127m. This deal is expected to close in March 2026.

The main data centres in this portfolio include the former CityLifeline data centre nearby on Clifton Street, as well as the former Sungard data centre in Feltham, south-west London.

With an expected 10 UK data centres and perhaps 15MW of built-out capacity (not including their private suite in the Digital Woking data centre), Stellanor are set to become an important new operator in the UK retail colocation market.

The majority of their capacity and data centres are in London and the south-east. Only the Elland data centre in West Yorkshire, midway between Leeds and Manchester, is in the north of the UK.

The addition of Redcentric’s data centres will add a broad portfolio of both clients and, hopefully, network. This will allow Stellanor to offer the kind of well-balanced package of colocation, network and support sought by the smaller users Colo-X specialises in helping.

Yet further change in the UK retail colocation market

The UK market for smaller data centre operators continues to largely be overshadowed by the headlines in the AI and hyperscale space. But as the emergence of yet another new provider in the retail space shows, there is also a lot happening at the smaller end of the market.

Colo-X continues to provide an independent perspective on the market. We are able to provide smaller data centre users with the benefit of our 25 years’ experience, helping buyers find the best solution for their needs quickly and easily.
